A Scarier Sequel
James Wan, director of Aquaman 2 and its predecessor, says that the sequel will be leaning further into his horror sensibilities and that some of the scenes will have “a little bit more” of his “scary sauce.”
Wan Returns to His Roots
The DC Twitter account shared an excerpt from a Q&A Wan recently did, ahead of the DC FanDome event. In the Q&A, he revealed that the film will have a “touch of horror”, much like the first film did with its Trench sequence.
“Just like the first movie had a touch of my horror sensibility in it, in regards to the Trench sequence, I would say there’ll be a little bit of that in this next one. I think it’s something that’s a big part of who I am, and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films. And especially a movie like Aquaman, where the story takes place in these underwater worlds that can be very scary. So naturally, my love for the horror genre just means that I latch myself to these scenes and try to give them a little bit more of my scary sauce.”
Wan Is No Stranger to Horror
The first movie’s Trench sequence was certainly something ripped out of a horror movie, seeing Arthur and Mera attacked and dragging into the ocean by a massive swarm of amphibious creatures. It was so well-received by fans that a horror-tinged spin-off centered on the Trench is said to be in early development at DC. Wan is partnering with Peter Safran to produce the film, but no official release date has been announced yet.
James Wan is no stranger to horror, having begun his career in the genre, having started such franchises as Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring films.
Some Uncertainty Around the Sequel
Aquaman 2 is set to release on December 16th, 2022, though a lot is unknown with the pandemic affecting film releases and the recent legal battle between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp casting doubt on whether the actress will be allowed back as Hera.
