Bill Gates Talks About Microsoft’s Early Culture
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates talks about the early culture the company followed, in an interview with CNN entitled “How To Lead”, airing on Sunday.
The early culture in Microsoft consists of “self-selected” people, and most of them were males. Gates admits that sometimes they were “tough on each other” and that “went too far.”
He was asked whether his “demanding” managerial style was a good way to motivate people or not. He answered it as, “It was very intense, we counted on each other to work very long hours, and I always wanted to set the best example at that.”
Recently dozens of women working in the company claimed that they had faced sexual harassment by the co-workers. A female employee reported that “an employee of a partner company threatened to kill her if she did not perform implied sexual acts.”
She added that Microsoft HR didn’t take any action on her complaint. We will update this story as further details come to light.
