Snapchat Denounces and Removes Donald Trump From their Discover Page

Anyone Remember Rodney King?

After numerous social media posts and inflammatory comments, Snapchat is one of the first Social Media Software platforms to take action. There have been no shortage of demands for all social media platforms to remove Trump. He’s used Twitter especially to push an agenda of violence and military action against peaceful protestors.

Catalyst for all of this was of course, the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer, Derek Chauvin. Even though Chauvin was eventually tried and found guilty, protests for meaningful change in Law Enforcement have been ongoing.

Whether we’re talking about Denver, Minneapolis, Washington DC, New York etc. Almost everyone, everywhere have joined in on the protests. This is not to say that there is not blame on both sides of the coin.

Yes, the protests have been peaceful and people are sick and tired of police brutality. However, the riots, are another story entirely. Riots are not protected, and wanton destruction of public property, private businesses and assault are unforgivable.

What Happens Afterwards?

The answer to violence is not more violence. Unfortunately, it also seems no one told President Donald Trump that. Yesterday, Lafayette Square outside of the White House, was the scene of a peaceful protest. No one was lighting anything on fire, no one was assaulting an officer, no one was burning cars and pulling civilians out. They were observing social distancing, protesting something they believe and know to be unjust.

How did the president respond? By tear gassing the crowd, firing rubber bullet munitions into the crowd and securing a pathway so that he could get a photo op. A photo op that has its own share of criticisms and controversy that we will not get into here.

Fallout is a word that tends to get thrown around a lot because of one reason or another. Usually a bit of a buzzword to sound prophetic or more intelligent in lieu of a better line of reasoning. However, it would seem that this time, it is completely warranted.

Donald Trump is seeing the fallout of his actions across the nation. Anti president sentiment is at an all time high, and even several officers, republicans and libertarians are withdrawing support.

Social Media Becomes More Reclusive

Even some privately traded social media companies are taking extra measures against Trump’s actions. Snapchat will no longer feature, support or push any of Trump’s messages, news or updates. Rachel Racusen, a spokesperson for Snapchat had this to say on the matter.

“We are not currently promoting the President’s content on Snapchat’s Discover platform. We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover.”

The president’s account will remain active on the platform, it just will not receive any more endorsements or pushes.

Ultimately, the fallout of this will come down to whatever comes with the election. There are concerns that we could be seeing Trump trying to do something unconstitutional and play a hand that no one expects. Similarly, many believe that this is simply a sign that Trump’s goodwill with the silent majority has finally worn out.

Whatever side you fall on, regardless of who you support and what you believe, I think we can all agree that we want a peaceful nation. We don’t want to be forced apart, told we’re inferior and that we have the wrong opinions. Times will change after this, regardless of what the net outcome.
