Earlier this week on October 23, actor Alec Baldwin was on the set of a new movie, “Rust,” being filmed when he was handed a prop gun that was loaded. When Baldwin was practicing his stunt for one of the scenes of the movie, the prop gun fired and killed Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, and injured director Joel Souza. Documents show that Baldwin had been sitting on a church pew on set when both Hutchins and Souza were viewing a camera angle, Souza had told detectives.
That day was already off to a later start than normal, according to director Souza. The crew had to wait for a new camera crew that morning due to one camera crew had quit previously. The weapons on set are checked by several people typically before being handed to an actor or actress for a scene. This day the guns were checked by the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, before being checked by assistant director Dave Halls, then given to the actor or actress. According to Souza, as far as he knew, no one was checked for live ammunition, just the weapons are inspected for any live ammunition.
During this time Reid Russell, a cameraman that was standing near Hutchins and Souza, said that Baldwin was in the middle of explaining how he was going to draw the gun for the scene while the rest of the crew was still setting up for the scene. Russell also stated that Baldwin had been “especially careful with handling weapons, making sure there wasn’t a child nearby when he was discharging a gun,” meaning Baldwin is aware of handling a weapon.
What is going to happen next to Baldwin? It is said that Baldwin is cooperating with investigations currently. Another question that is now coming up, is whether to allow real weapons on other movie sets in the future. Time will tell and we are following the story as it progresses.
In recent news that BBC released on November 18, 2021, a lawsuit has been drawn up against Alec Baldwin that alleges that the film script for the day of the accident did not require a gun to be fired during any scenes that were to be shot that day. The script supervisor, Mamie Michell, was the one who called police after the shooting is now the one filing the lawsuit against Alec Baldwin. According to Michell’s lawyer, the behavior of Baldwin was “reckless” as Baldwin is being accused of failing to follow the safety protocols set in place.
When more information comes we will continue to update this story.
