President Trump Bans Travel from Brazil

On Sunday, President Trump issued a ban on individuals coming to the U.S. who have been in Brazil in the last 14 days, in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security, the president said Brazil was the latest country to face travel bans amidst a surge in cases. The order will take effect Thursday at 11:59 P.M. EDT.

Brazil has been one of the hardest hit countries, second only to the U.S. in terms of total confirmed cases. This is largely due to the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, repeatedly dismissing the pandemic and referring to the virus as a “little flu”. He has repeatedly urged governors to lift their stay-at-home orders and re-open for business.

In a statement, press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, said:

“Today, the President has taken decisive action to protect our country by suspending the entry of aliens who have been in Brazil during the 14-day period before seeking admittance to the United States.”

The restrictions don’t apply to the flow of commerce between the two countries.

All foreign nationals from Iran, China, and certain European countries are barred from entering the country, including anyone who entered these countries in the last 14 days.

The European countries included in this are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The U.S. borders between Mexico and Canada will remain closed until June 22nd.
