Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime in 2016’s Suicide Squad was divisive, to say the least, but it looks like there may be more to the character than most people think.
This version of the Joker was unique, seeing him be a gangster with chrome teeth, bright suits, and many tattoos. One of these tattoos is the word “damaged” written across his forehead. When it was first revealed, the tattoo got a lot of criticism from fans, who felt it was too on-the-nose and lacked subtlety.
But one fan believed that this tattoo had a purpose besides an effort to look “edgy”, and that theory was confirmed by director, David Ayers, on Twitter.

That’s right, it looks like the tattoo was meant as a way to antagonize Batman. In the DCEU, it was confirmed that at some point, Joker killed Robin, though which Robin is unknown. We assume its Jason Todd, just as it was in the comics. Batman, in an effort to get revenge for Robin’s death, brutalized Joker, possibly even causing the villain to need to get those chrome teeth. Joker then got this tattoo as a reminder to the Dark Knight of his brutality and anger.
This confirmation may not make Suicide Squad a good movie, but it does give us some interest in what could have been. Unfortunately, we will never see this dynamic between Batman and Joker play out. Ben Affleck has since left the role of Batman, and with the recent Joker origin film using Joaquin Phoenix last year, it doesn’t look like Leto is going to be taking on the role again. There were a lot of plans that were meant for the DCEU that have since been scrapped, and for many of us who still have interest in it, we can only speculate on what could have been.
