Despite the social distancing in place right now, there are still plenty of people who will be celebrating 4/20 today. Every year, on April 20th, stoners around the country gather to get as high as they can. And if you are wanting to celebrate, and since we can’t gather in large groups right now, why not watch a good stoner comedy instead
We have the top 10 stoner comedies that you can watch tonight while getting the munchies!
The Pineapple Express
This is one of the ultimate stoner comedies, brought to you by two of the biggest stoners in the business. Seth Rogen and James Franco are on point as a hapless man and his weed dealer, as they are forced into a dangerous situation. Along the way, we get one of our personal favorite Danny McBride roles and plenty of dumb laughs. Clever? Probably not. But stoner comedies aren’t really meant for that.
This is the End
Another comedy with Rogen, Franco, and McBride, this one has the actors, plus more, playing themselves as the end of the world begins. The entire cast is a comedy force in this film, and while it isn’t the most coherent or well-made film, the improv is fantastic, and once you accept that you are watching a series of vignettes, you are in for a great time.
Fast Time at Ridgemont High
How could we not include this movie? Sean Penn’s famous turn as Spicoli is one of the stoner icons of film, and also the best part of this movie. A raunchy, coming-of-age story has a lot of good parts, but it is definitely Spicoli who brings it all together. Stoners around the world have probably heard of his name at some point.
Plenty of cult classic fans know this movie. It went under the radar upon release, but stoners latched onto it. Watching a group of state troopers chase down drug dealers and mess with stoners is pure, stoner comedic gold, with plenty of laughs and giggles to be had as you partake in the green stuff.
The Big Lebowski
A movie whose main character is named The Dude has to be a stoner comedy, and this Coen Brothers classic is certainly that. Jeff Bridges is wonderful as The Dude, earning him life-long recognition. The story of an aging hippie who just smokes weed and bowls all day, and suddenly has to deal with the consequences of someone breaking in and peeing on his rug is pretty nonsensical, but that is perfect for stoners.
Wet Hot American Summer
This movie is all about a group of summer camp counselors and it is full of perfect stoner gold. It has budding stars like Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks, and they are all great in it. This movie is a real blast, especially if you are “indulging”.
Yeah, this movie is really dumb and we won’t argue that it can even be classified as “good”, but we would be lying if we said there wasn’t something about it that entertained us. A tale of a burn-out game developer who lives with his grandmother is a bizarre one, and there are some real “Um, what?” moments, but through it all, there is something that keeps us laughing.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
The king of getting high himself, Kevin Smith, is known for his character, Silent Bob, and this movie is, perhaps, the best of them all. It may not make a lot of sense, but it doesn’t need to when you are high. Plus, it sports a pretty great cameo by Ben Affleck, which is worth it alone.
Before the Wayans brothers stopped being funny and spoof movies became just awful, a movie like Scary Movie was an absolute riot. This movie that takes on so many famous horror movies and tropes is a delight to watch, and while the series lost itself along the way, this first entry is a reminder of what made them so great.
How could you not laugh at a movie with Dave Chappelle in it? The movie stars Chappelle as a man, who with his eccentric friends, plan to break another friend out of jail. What follows is crazy, weed-filled, and a very funny. You can’t not laugh while watching this movie.
There are a lot of ways we can make up for celebrating with people today, and any of these movies we listed is a great choice. So kick back, light up, and be safe while laughing far too much at far too many things.
