As a new generation of gaming consoles is coming up, we are sure to have a plethora of new first-person shooters to play through when the next generation launches.

But before we can get excited for what’s to come, we can look back and see the games that gave inspiration to these games that coming to us in the future!

Here are our choices for the 10 best first-person shooters of all-time!

Goldeneye

Come on, you know we had to mention this game. This classic from the N64 is still a blast to play. When it came out, it revolutionized multiplayer with its local capabilities. Many of us grew up blasting each other over and over again, yelling at each other for screen-peeking, and trying to find the Golden Gun. It changed gaming forever and we are still feeling those changes today.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Another iconic game that we had to put on this list. Just as Goldeneye helped change local multiplayer, Halo changed both that and single player. The campaign was a full-throttle, sci-fi, action adventure, with only one level we can really say we don’t like (looking at you, Library). The multiplayer was a blast with friends, and while the sequel would really bring online gaming into the mainstream, the original is where it all started.

Bioshock

When you think about first-person shooters, you usually think about multiplayer experiences, but with Bioshock, multiplayer is not the name of the game. Your journey through an underwater dystopia that has fallen to shambles is both terrifying and captivating. It’s blend of philosophical questions and explorations, as well as borderline-super powers in the plasmids make for an unforgettable experience.

Bioshock Infinite

Which brings us to the third game in the series. We know, many of you think the first is the best, but we disagree. The original may have introduced us to the game systems and styles, but Infinite, in our opinion, perfected it. Yes, it isn’t as “open” as the first two games, but its setting is so beautiful and fascinating. Taking us to a flying city, its story is one that has stuck with us ever since we first played it in 2013.

Titanfall 2

Respawn Entertainment made a somewhat low-key entrance onto the scene with the first Titanfall, and while this sequel still didn’t make the waves it deserved to, it got way more critical acclaim and praise from critics and players alike. Its excellent campaign is a rush of adrenaline and its multiplayer was addicting and deep. Calling in your Titan to wreak havoc on your enemies was a fantastic experience.

Half-Life 2

Before Bioshock, Half-Life 2 was the quintessential, narrative-driven first-person game. Following Gordon Freeman as he tries to help a rebellion in City 17, we were introduced to unforgettable characters, great segments of gameplay, and a world rich with story. The series has become a meme for its unfinished state right now, but we sincerely hope we see a resolution one day.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Before this entry, Call of Duty was known for its WWII settings. That changed with 4, when Infinity Ward brought the series – and FPS games – to the modern age. We still don’t know what kind of black magic they worked, but the entire thing just worked so well. We are fans of the series and enjoy its on-the-surface content and experience, but no game has been able to match it. From its single player to its multiplayer, everything was perfect.

Doom

Before being rebooting with the stellar 2016 game and its sequel that came out this year, the series was a step forward for gaming. It was pure thrills as you navigated endless hallways, killing demons, and taking on the worst kind of monsters from Hell. It was so influential that it even got its own set of movies.

Left 4 Dead

Valve’s first foray into the chaotic, procedurally-generated world of zombies was something incredibly unique at the time. While only sporting a handful of campaigns to fight through, the random spawning of zombies, the selection of difficulties, and hilariously crazy moments made something that we still love to go back to now.

Borderlands 2

The second entry into the looter-shooter is the best of the bunch. It features more guns to play with, more wacky characters, more witty dialogue, and more characters to interact with. The co-op also was a fantastic time, bringing you with three friends to shoot and loot your way through the story. It features one of our favorite villains, Handsome Jack, who makes us laugh with every line of dialogue.

So there you have it. Our favorite first-person shooters of all-time. Did your favorite make it on the list? Are there any games you feel like we left out? Let us know in the comments!
