We’d forgive you for not knowing that this film is less than a month away. Disney’s Mulan remake has pretty much flown under the radar for its whole advertising campaign. Which has become par for the course for Disney’s Live Action Remakes.
Do not let that deter you however, Mulan is at least shaping up to distinguish itself from its animated roots. Whether you think that’s a good thing or not, well that is up to you.
If you’re unaware of the changes made to the source material here’s a brief recap. Mulan is a remake of the animated Disney classic. A musical tale about a young woman who pretends to be a man to fight for her country and save her family. Along the way she’s accompanied by her guardian, a wise cracking dragon named Mushu.
This is Not Mulan V2.0
Where the live action remake differs is notable. Firstly, there is no Mushu. Secondly, it is not a musical and will have original music. Thirdly, the famous Captain Shang is rumored to not be a part of this film. Fourthly, Shan Yu is not the villain. The Hun army will still feature but without the infamous villain.
To give credit where it is due, while some of these changes hurt, Disney has gotten flack for not being original with the remakes. Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin were nearly shot-for-shot remakes.
If you happen to be someone who did take issue with that approach then who knows, maybe Mulan will be the surprise hit of the year!
What do you think, will Mulan bring honor to Disney’s Remakes? Or will it go down as an unfortunate experiment? Be sure to leave us a comment and let us know what you think, also check out our YouTube channel for all things that do not make it into article form!
