Just so happens that some absolutely fantastic movies are available on Netflix to stream, right now!

POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR MOVIES AHEAD

Zodiac (2007)

We’ve talked about Zodiac before, and how it is one of the greatest movies ever made. We will stand by that claim until the day we die and most moviegoers would agree with us.

Telling the dramatized true story of the hunt for the Zodiac Serial Killer. Told from the perspective of a reporter, a cartoonist and a police detective. We watch from these various viewpoints as they try to find the true identity of the man behind the killings.

The movie is wonderfully tense, incredibly haunting, shot to perfection and featuring some of the best performances in a horror movie.

Killing Them softly (2012)

Mob movies and Hollywood go together like wine and cheese. Some of cinema’s greatest outings have been crime thrillers like Godfather, Goodfellas and The Untouchables.

This movie is a little more satirical and much harsher than the previous mentioned films. It’s aggressively hard hitting, political, darkly funny and stuffed with profanity, misogyny and violence.

It isn’t a film for sitting back, cracking a beer and enjoying the ride. Rather, this is a film to create an essay about, study the subtext and understand the characters.

The Master (2012)

Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman star in this dark tale about mind control, cults and our inner desires.

With commentary on the human condition, perceived happiness and the pursuit of that happiness. Paul Thomas Anderson has never been a filmmaker for the simple, nor for the casual. His films are hard to watch, difficult to comprehend and densely packed with details.

No exception here, and the acting is characteristically amazing for these two veteran Oscar winners!

There Will be Blood (2007)

There’s a good reason why Paul Thomas Anderson is on this list twice, his filmography is some of the greatest of all time.

Look no further than his tale of corruption, greed, menace and capitalism in There Will Be Blood. Daniel Plainview is an oil businessman who thrives on the manipulation of those he deems less then him.

Full of amazing cinematography moments, Daniel Day Lewis’s best performance and incredible pacing. Not only one of the best films on this list, one of the best films of all time.

Babel (2006)

Starring Brad Pitt once again on this list, Babel is the tale of four families and how one event can involve them. When a vacationing couple is struck by tragedy, it begins a domino effect that has unseen repercussions.

Amazing cinematography, acting, dialogue, writing, pacing and a grand sense of scale. Babel is a movie that more people should see and talk about, because it is a phenomenal showcase for all involved.

United 93 (2006)

One of the first movies I ever saw that made me cry uncontrollably. The story of the passengers aboard the doomed United 93 flight, a plane involved in the 9/11 hijackings.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, the talented man behind the Bourne movies, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. Obviously, the end goal destination is one that most of us are familiar with.

Even then, knowing the final destination, does not take away from the sheer adrenaline, emotion and effectiveness of the movie.

Locke (2013)

Tom Hardy in a car for two hours by himself watching his life spin out of control may sound boring, trust us, it’s not.

Carrying the film through sheer determination of will, charisma and energy, Hardy is a force to be reckoned with. Doesn’t hurt that the camera shots, while claustrophobic, are phenomenal with great usage of color.

It might not blow you away at first, but once this movie gets going, director Steven Knight makes sure you’re here to stay.

Mud (2012)

When two boys meet a strange man by the name of Mud, he tells them stories of his life. How he falls in love, gets in fights and learns lessons.

There’s something boiling under the surface of this movie, but you can never quite tell what it is. Trust us, stick around through the whole movie and enjoy the ride. Truly unique, reminiscent of older tales like Tom Sawyer, Mud is a movie to be enjoyed over and over again.

The Florida Project (2017)

Willem Dafoe gives the performance of his career in this tale of two troubled families.

All about finding the magic in the world around you but also a scathing commentary on the lower class and blue collar America.

Also, it has some of the best child actors that we have ever seen in a movie. Which may seem like a rare thing, but this movie goes above and beyond.

Mudbound (2017)

In the times that we live in, there’s few other times that movies like Mudbound are not essential viewing.

When two families find themselves living side by side on a farmland, they have to confront the realities of life. One family is white, the other is black. In a land torn apart by WWII they have to adjust and adapt.

With amazing acting, timely commentaries on prejudice and racism, Mudbound is a phenomenal film that deserves a viewing.

The Pianist (2002)

Adrien Brody stars in this film about a Jewish piano player in war torn Poland.

At the height of World War II, Warsaw is under heavy attack and segregation by the Nazi Third Reich. As they go around destroying homes, families and businesses, one man tries to survive the chaos.

In real life, Adrien Brody sold all of his possessions and lived a life of poverty in Poland for months. Taking method acting to a whole new level for the role. His work was rewarded with an Oscar, and The Pianist has stood the test of time as a masterpiece.
