FINALLY GOOD CORONAVIRUS NEWS: Recovery Rates Expected to Be High

It’s not all just bad news when it comes to the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

According to experts, an average healthy person who contracts the virus might sugger a dry cough, fatigue, fever, and may be sidelined for a week or two. After that period of time, they should be fine.

This isn’t a reason to not be cautious about the virus, but it means that you don’t have to panic if you get it.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, predicts that the recovery percentage rate would reach “the high 90’s.”

As Seigel explains,”One of the problems with this is it’s an evolving scenario, and people jump to the worst-case scenario… It’s too much doomsday stuff.”

He expects the death rate of the virus to be under 1%, although a little worse than the flu.

92,000 people have contracted the virus across the world, most of them being in China, with nearly 49,000 already recovering, while about 3,130 have died. Siegel believes that as more cases pop up, the recovery rate will increase and the death rate will decrease.

Anna Yeung-Cheung, Manhattanville College Professor, explaines that, “The interesting thing about this virus is it’s not that difficult to kill, like Ebola and norovirus.”

She also explains how the virus has been unique in the fact that the very young are faring better than they usually do with their compromised immune systems. She does warn though that while this is good for them, it does mean they can carry it silently easier.

Regardless, this is good news in an ocean of fear and bad news. The coronavirus is not something to be taken lightly, but it isn’t cause for a panic. This kind of news does a lot to give hope that it will calm down with time.
